August 1st '08 - Hell: A Game of Space Warfare

This idea I have been working on a foundation for in the last year though I first drew up the concept and meta-story when I was in Vancouver in '04.

It draws upon the inevitablity of armed conflict in space. It would truly be a Hell, this state of fighting in a place where you can't even rely on there being an air source and where the soldiers are so very far from home.

This is the basic game format with more to follow:

Hell: A Game of Space Warfare brings players to the war for Sol system. Fight strategically and tactically in the orbital cities, asteroid bases, Martian jungles and all the icy vacuum in-between. This game uses a mission system set in the time after the Earth's cities were destroyed by the evil Warpigs.

Players can control cities and capitol ships that are deployed on a simple 3 dimensional hex-board. As well these larger areas have their own tactical maps for simulation of boarding party battles, weapon strikes and tactical deployment information like command center locations, hanger decks, and storage areas.

Combat and skill use are decided by a simple combination of ability stats and some random dice elements.

Hell also has a robust technological InSpace strategic computer system that portray use of internet and hive mind drone systems and a system of hidden movement for cloaked units. Also included are heavy weapons vessels that can vaporize a planetary province. These are known as Gravitation Killers. There are infantry cybernetic enhancements like smart-guns and finger claws.

The factions of Hell included in the first rule-book and components set are:

The Rogue Army: former NATO operatives that now exist as the DDF, sworn enemy of the Warpigs. Specialists in: Character units, Fighter craft, Installations

The Warpigs: Techno-communist fascists that live to consume and destroy. Specialists in: InSpace deployment, Mecha, Gravitation Killers

Also in development for expansion are several other key groups:

The Corporates: efficient yet callous builders of the Sol System infrastructure. Specialists in: InSpace deployment, Fighter-craft, Orbital installations

The Settlers: The builders and energy farmers of orbital space. Also Martian colonists. Specialists in: Large infantry numbers, Installations

The Zero-G Mafia: A cartel of future criminals. Specialists in: Character units, Stealth, InSpace deployment

This game will have web-support.

July 14th '08 - Cell: Prime Beta released

It came together well in the end. I do plan on a PDF soon with Nathan's cover but it seemed fitting to release it at BGG first in a thread.

Thanks to all who commented and encouraged.

Also click here to go to the combined design threads. You can see how it was hashed out.

June 9th '08 - Cell: Prime

I will be releasing 2 versions of Cell. Cell and Cell: Prime. Cell: Prime will be a print n' play pdf version with my art (excepting for the cover illo which will be supplied by Nathan Trimmer). Cell regular version will be a boxed copy published after Cell: Prime with component art supplied by artists other than myself.

Cell: Prime will be a free promotion and I hope will result in some feedback for the print version.

Here are two examples of component art for Cell: Prime:

Corporate Samurai

Hover-biker

In game mechanics news Cell will use a tile ownership system based on the anchient Asian game of Go. Card "cells" are laid then converted through battle from the edge of the board where exist the warfare units (such as samurai and bikers). Cubes or other colored markers on the cell flip from ownership of player to player in furous action as the Sprawl grows.

So things are coming along. I will work to finish the alpha Cell: Prime in 1 to 2 weeks.

May 23rd '08 - Cell cover illo and new Warpunk logo!

The box cover for Cell is finished by the talented graphic artist Nathan Trimmer. As well Nathan has provided me with the new Warpunk logo you see placed at the top of the page!

Click here to go to the Cell wallpaper page and pick up a free desktop! This was crafted by Nathan Trimmer as well.

In design news for Cell I am trading hex tiles for cards. This game may very well be provided in a card box. I am working on whether to provide blocks for ownership markers or use flat tokens.

April 20 '08 - A board concept for Cell

In Cell I want the strategy of a city build-ing game with action of an anime Neo -Tokyo firefight. I thought that players' could build the Sprawl with hex tiiles that have variant properties; creating sections through clever play that give the player points.

So players' can also deploy warfare units to fight and convert Cells but how do players use these fighting markers with-out disrupting the Sprawl Cell tiles? I thought that fighting units could only use the edge or jump across (like maybe a flying unit, Hoverbikers?).

April 14 '08 - A new idea and thoughts about a schedule

I am in love with cyberpunk. It's been this way since I was in junior high when I carried Gibson's "Neuromancer" around with me. Mercenary samurai and hackers fighting against the system was a story that spoke to me. I never became a hacker but I sure as hell saw the value of building my information skills. Martial arts and web technique I also pursued because of my love of the cyberpunk genre and it hasn't served me poorly; 32 with a good life.

Cell is a cyberpunk boardgame idea in me that is screaming to get out. It is a hex tile laying game where players' portray Corporations building power bases while employing hackers, hoverbike gangs, and street ninja.

I think I will develop this close to the BoardGameGeek design community. See what those cats have to say.
